A dog bed that fits their way of sleeping
Choose a bed around your dog’s sleeping position and the usable space inside it. Compare the inner dimensions, access height and cleaning instructions before choosing a shape or fabric.
Watch where they settle
Does your dog curl into a small circle, stretch on their side or rest their chin on a cushion? That observation is a useful starting point for comparing shapes. A raised-sided bed and an open cushion can have similar outer dimensions but quite different sleeping space. Measure the area your dog actually occupies when resting.
Read both sets of dimensions
A product’s advertised length may include thick outer bolsters. Look for the sleeping area as well as the overall footprint, and allow for the space the bed will take in your room. If the listing does not make that distinction clear, ask the seller. Do not assume the dog shown in a photograph matches your dog’s size.
Make washing part of the decision
Removable covers are useful only if the care routine works for you. Check whether the cushion, cover and filling have separate instructions; whether the cover will fit your washing machine; and how the item should dry. Keep a second washable layer available if your dog regularly comes home wet. Follow the actual care label rather than a general fabric rule.
Choose the location as carefully as the bed
RSPCA guidance recommends a comfortable, dry resting place away from draughts, with opportunities for undisturbed rest. Consider household traffic and noise before placing the bed. For dogs with pain, mobility difficulties or a change in sleeping habits, get advice from your vet rather than relying on a product described as orthopaedic or calming.
What our shortlist tells you
