Choosing toys for the way your dog plays

The starting point

Match the toy to your dog’s size and style of play. Fetch, tug and food-search activities use different designs. Supervise unfamiliar toys and inspect them regularly; no toy is indestructible.

Begin with an activity

Choose a toy for a particular shared activity rather than buying several versions of the same thing. A ball may suit a short fetch game, a longer fabric toy may suit interactive tug, and a treat dispenser may offer a different kind of task. Watch which activities your dog enjoys and keep play manageable for their age and ability.

Separate play toys from chew products

A soft toy or tug toy should not automatically be treated as something suitable for prolonged chewing. Read the maker’s intended use and size guidance. The KONG Wubba listing, for example, describes an interactive toy rather than a chew toy. Packaging words such as tough or durable are not a guarantee that your particular dog cannot damage it.

Inspect before and after play

Look for loose pieces, damaged seams, exposed filling or changes in the surface. Remove a damaged toy. Pick a size that cannot easily be swallowed, supervise first use and adapt to the individual dog. Blue Cross emphasises making play safe and enjoyable and exploring the kinds of play your dog naturally enjoys.

Keep food-based games straightforward

Start with an easy version of the activity so your dog can discover how it works. Check that a puzzle or feeder is intended for the food you use and can be cleaned properly. Treats used during an activity still form part of what your dog eats. Food puzzles are accessories, not treatment for anxiety or other behavioural concerns.

Buy fewer things with a clearer purpose

A simple rotation can make it easier to notice preferences and inspect each item. Write down the size, intended activity, cleaning method and any supervision instructions when comparing products. In the Norvik play collection, check the original product page before making a decision; colour assortments and dimensions may vary between listings.
